Ferris Wheel Views
The last time we went to Seattle in 2008 we had a wonderful time, but we didn’t get to see the city like we saw it when riding the Seattle Great Wheel. As soon as I peered out the window in our room at Hotel 1000 and spotted it, I knew we had to find a way to get over there for a ride. Luckily it was in walking distance.
Built in 2012, Great Wheel is mounted out on Pier 57 down from Pike Place Market and The Seattle Aquarium (two other ‘musts’ if you are visiting Seattle for the first time). It’s the tallest of its kind on the west coast and has an overall height of 175 feet, which is roughly the equivalent to a 14 story building. Yeah… that’s pretty huge. I have been accustomed to dinky Ferris Wheels at county and state fairs. When we went up it was so smooth and fantastic, it was almost like we were floating in the sky. It reminded me of the end scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Willy, Charlie and his Grandpa shoot into the air in the Glass Elevator. The pods you ride in allow you to look out East onto the city and West onto Puget Sound. It was even air conditioned inside! Talk about a pleasure ride! We went around a total of 3 times and stopped what seemed like 4 times at top peaks. As you can see by our photos, it was an absolutely beautiful day, just perfect for hanging out in the sky.
Seattle is such a beautiful city and seeing it from the wheel is a must. Next time we go back, I am for sure going to go back and bring some binoculars to possibly see some sea life on the Sound.
