Before I met Jade, I didn’t really like ice cream. That sounds crazy, I know, because who doesn’t like that delightful, cold, creamy treat on a hot summers day or in the evening after a long workday? I didn’t. It just wasn’t my cup of tea, so to speak. I was a chocolate or cheesecake kind of guy. But now I’ve realized that I didn’t just ‘not like ice cream,’ I didn’t like bad ice cream: over sugared, over churned, bland flavored, freezer burnt concoctions. It’s not like Jade had too much of a different experience than I did when it came to frozen deserts in her childhood, but she is far more adventurous than I ever was to find truly delicious ice cream. Since she had the opportunity to try all sorts of different places around the city, she was exposed to the concept of ‘gourmet ice cream.’ After we began dating years ago Jade knew she had to convert me to an ice cream lover. Gourmet ice cream altered my whole desert preference and consequently my entire world in general changed. All of these savories and sweets working together to create a whole new experience.

This is where Salt & Straw comes in. Not too long after she introduced me to the depths and intensity of flavor that ice cream could actually have, she discovered a little ice cream cart that had just started in the Northeast part of Portland, which she said we absolutely had to try. I won’t lie, I was still skeptical about ice cream, but I was at least open to the possibilities. When we got the opportunity to finally go to the cart, it was a normal rainy Oregon day, not the type of day i would have preferred to eat ice cream on. But we each got a scoop anyways and as soon as I took that first lick of my cone… my face was blown off! I had never tasted anything like it in my whole life. I was officially an ice cream fan after that… but that was only the beginning…

Fast forward a couple years. Salt & Straw now have expanded from their simple ice cream cart, to two scoop shops and one combo scoop shop/bakery. We were able to go in to their newest location a day or two after it opened off of Southeast Division street and 33rd. We have been to their other two locations many times (we actually live four blocks away from their Northwest Portland location, dangerous I know) but this new location has its own unique charm that sets itself apart from their other two location. It’s a cross between stylish and modern design in front and behind the bar, with a bit of a rocking casbah flair with the beautiful linen drapery that hangs from the ceiling.

I knew exactly what I wanted when I came in which was a double scoop, one of the Strawberry with Cilantro Lime Cheesecake and the other scoop Birthday Cakes with Blackberries. SUCH AN EPIC COMBINATION. Jade got a scoop of their Raspberry Lemon Basil Sorbet, which I assure you is the best sorbet that I have ever tasted in my life. The savory notes from the basil with the acidic twist of the raspberry and lemon is outstanding.

Don’t let the construction going on outside around this location fool you! They are open and ready to serve you…

Hello! I was perusing the internet and decided to check out your blog. It’s beautiful and it makes me miss home! AND of course I miss Salt & Straw… we only have ‘bad’ ice cream here in San Luis Obispo 🙂 You are doing a great job! Hope all is well!

This reminds me big time of old cirucs memories. These pictures are so pretty, it’s like interior porn. Even the font on the signs is matching the interior :O !

Which camera(s) do you use, may I ask?

We shot this space with a Canon 5d Mark II and 50mm 1.4 lens.
