A month and a half ago, Jade and I moved into one of our favorite areas in Portland: the Alphabet District. We’ve walked around the area so many times in the last 6 years of being together it began to feel like home. It only made sense that we moved in to one of the quaint, pre-war apartments the neighborhood is filled with. With old buildings you get quirks, cracks, and lots of little renovation projects to do, that is, if you want it to be a place that you could see yourself living in for more than just a few months. In fact, the first two weeks after we had signed the lease I spent patching, painting, spackling and grouting to make sure it was up to livable standards before we moved even one box in. Some would say, ‘isn’t that what you have a landlord for?’ and I say yeah… but I know I can do the job better and I don’t have to worry about some stranger coming in and out of my apartment however many times a day it takes to get all the work done. Long story short, we are still unpacking and moving boxes around and slowly renovating things to our liking. I just have to keep reminding myself to breath and that it’s a process.

One particular plus to living in this neighborhood is all of the fantastic places we can walk less than a block to, including Sterling Coffee Roasters. In the first week of renovations of this new apartment, I decided to go take a look around the block and see if there was a place I could just relax for a moment and not think about the massive crack in the wall I was struggling to repair. There it was. This quaint little corner shop, no bigger than my own kitchen, with flowers, ornate mirrors, a hand crafted wooden bar and an awesome American eagle festooned mirror on the wall. I felt like I stepped right into one of Hemingway’s dreams…

Sterling was then, as it is now, the perfect getaway for Jade and I to get a cup close to home, escaping the renovation tornado that is our apartment. The space also doubles in the evening as Northwest Portland’s M Bar. Kind of a perfect combination, if you ask me. Coffee shop by day (to keep you going) and trendy servers of libations and spirits by night (to allow you the wind down time you so rightfully deserve). Though we haven’t tried its latter bar embodiment, we definitely have plans to do so soon. Possibly in celebration of our apartment finally being finished…

It looks so pretty! I actually don’t go to that part of Portland very often, I really want to now though so I can check out all the lovely places you’ve been posting about!

Aw, thanks Julianna! You must come! Its been so fun living over here and slowly checking out places I’ve always meant to go to but never did. It’s also been somewhat dangerous for the waistline, haha! I can walk out my door and see Ken’s Bakery. Have you ever had one of their morning buns with sugar and orange zest? My word, one of the best pastries I’ve ever had…
