Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market is a creative and culinary hub for Seattle, one that when you visit you know you’ll end up there at one point in your trip. Since we were just a short walk down the street from it, we toured it twice during our two day stay in the city.  There are plenty of mainstays within the market, like Rachel the giant bronze piggy bank, Don and Joe’s Meats, or the Athenian Inn. Honestly if you don’t go through it at least twice you’re going to miss out on some of the best shops, artisans and even street performers, because it’s always changing in some form or another. The first time we went to see Seattle together back in 2008, we actually took a guided food tour of Pike Place Market called Savor Seattle. We highly recommend their tour if you are visiting the market for the first time. You can get a sampling of all the wonderful things the market has to offer and bypass all those crazy lines.

Since we are seasoned pros of market walk throughs now, we decided to just take in as much as we could, and whatever we were to tired to see by the end of our tour, we could just come back and see in the morning. Pike Place Market has been open over a century. Its age really can be seen when walking by the classic architecture of the buildings that surround, but it’s beauty hasn’t been manipulated and has stood the test of time. When first stepping foot on to Pike place, if it weren’t for the cars whizzing by, it would feel as if you took a step back in time. The first things you see are the open air produce stands, a horse and carriage, and all of the colorful vibrancy of the people milling about.

We wanted to get inside of the main drag of the market and see what all of the vendors, merchants and artisans had to offer. Though it was labor day weekend when we were there and the crowds were bustling through, head down and shoulder to shoulder, we still were able to see the beauty of all of the gorgeous floral arrangements, shops stocked with fresh seafood and handmade jewelry. We knew that we had to go to one of our favorite places in the market which is Daily Dozen Doughnuts. They make the most delicious mini-doughnuts I have ever had in my whole life. I could eat them all day until I was sick and I almost did too.

IMG_0073 IMG_0081 IMG_0119 IMG_0117 IMG_0023 IMG_0021 IMG_0018 IMG_0168

After our trip to doughnut heaven, we ended up in line at Beecher’s Handmade Cheeses, because you know… cheese balances out sugar intake and whatnot. Beecher’s have won more than 20 awards for their natural cheeses since opening a decade ago. We opted to share a cup of their “World’s Best” Mac & Cheese, which is perfectly cooked penne pasta and their award winning Flagship cheese. After almost going in to a cheese induced coma we agreed that it really does live up to it’s world famous title. Another stroll through the market to take photos of the beautiful flowers was all we needed to get us back on track.

On our second day going through the market the crowds had barely subsided but we knew there was food to be eaten and treasures to be seen, so we pressed on into the streets like starving, blood thirsty warriors on a mission. But first we had to settle some curiosities. We have seen photos and heard tales of the Gum Wall in Post Alley but had never actually ventured to see the horror/glory of the mythical sounding landmark. It turns out that it is in fact a wall covered in chewed gum and smells like a third grade classroom the day after halloween. Much like a car crash, it was truly horrific… but we couldn’t look away from the saliva infused terror.

IMG_0130 IMG_0147 IMG_0139

Lastly we had to end our time in Pike Place Market with some delightful baked goods from Piroshky PiroShky Bakery. They have been open for over two decades and have been serving up the best tastes of Russia in a pastry. WARNING: the line is always long… but always worth the wait. We decided we would have two savory and one sweet. First a Cheddar Cheese and Garlic Roll and a Smoked Salmon Pate Piroshky, the latter my personal favorite, followed by a Chocolate Cream Haselnut Roll. We enjoyed them on one of the back balconies of the market overlooking the docks, were serenaded in the background by a golden tongued street musician and shared some laughs over the fat, homely looking pigeons hanging around. We had a ton of fun in the market and still have only touched the surface of all of its wonders. That just means we have to go back next time we’re in our fair sister city.

Top Pot Doughnuts

Posted on June 18, 2013

IMG_0523 IMG_0547

Jade has been telling me for months that we have to go and check out Top Pot Doughnuts in Seattle the next time we are there. I was 100% on board with this idea, since living in Portland, we have quite a few doughnut shops around and I love fried dough. I’ve had the opportunity to try quite a few different types of doughnuts, so I consider myself a bit of a doughnut oficianado. Top Pot has grown to have quite the reputation since opening in 2002, and they claim to make “hand forged” doughnuts with a secret 1920′s recipe, so I knew I needed to be prepared when I finally  got to try one.

We were staying at Hotel 1000, so we were only 10 blocks away from the nearest Top Pot location. On the second and final day of our trip, I knew that I had to make sure that we made it down there so I could finally try their acclaimed fare. We finally made it to their shop on 5th and Blanchard. The location is absolutely unmistakable with their giant, old fashioned neon sign adorning the top corner of their building. The entire storefront is one enormous pane of windows which allows patrons to see in to both the bottom and top floors. When I walked in the front doors, what I immediately noticed were the two massive walls on either side of the shop stacked from floor to ceiling with books, the stylish and friendly barista/shop keeps, and all of the natural light that pours in from the windows. This felt very familiar and homey, and definitely had the friendly Northwest vibe that we’re so fond of in Portland.

IMG_0529 IMG_0526 IMG_0538 IMG_0535 IMG_0553

We ordered a Pink Feather Boa (their signature)  which is a cake style doughnut that is pink iced and covered with shredded coconut, and the second was a simple Raspberry glazed ring. In addition to our two delectable doughnuts we had a sweet and fruity concoction called a Cherry Blossom which consisted of a shot of cherry syrup, ice, and milk. It was a lot like a frothy, melted milkshake. We sat down and indulged in our sugary treats and took in the place as much as we could. My one regret is not trying their small batch roasted coffee which is another thing they are known for. I suppose that just means we need to go back and spend more time basking in their atmosphere for and extended period of time.

A Trip to Our Neighborhood Farmer’s Market

Posted on June 15, 2013

'A Trip to Our Neighborhood Farmer's Market' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured #farmersmarket

Every Sunday from May through October in our lovely little neighborhood, there is a quaint farmer’s market that seems to appear out of nowhere. There is live music, fresh herbs and produce, stunning flowers and delicious food. We used to consider it a neighborhood secret… but now the secret is out and the market is always SWARMING with people.

Since we are moving, we are hoping to fit in one last visit tomorrow if we have the time. You see, Cory is graduating from college tomorrow!! I am so unbelievably proud of him. He has worked so hard and I can’t wait to see this chapter of his life end and a new one begin. These last few years have been trying ones (illness, disappointment, unexpected changes, etc) but I feel like they have led us to this beautiful time in our life together. I’m learning to find joy in the journey. I’m excited for what’s on the horizon…

'24/52' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured

We found a new apartment!! Our lease isn’t up till the end of the month but we already have the keys to our new place which means there is plenty of time for cleaning and painting before moving all of our stuff over. Our new place definitely has it’s quirks, but makes up for it in charm and location.

And now, a few links we are endlessly enraptured with this week…

Inspired by Andrea‘s recent Paris post. I hope I get to share an adventure like that with my own children someday.

Dreaming of beach adventures.

Can’t wait to decorate our new apartment. This will be our first real home together and we’re looking forward to collecting quality pieces to turn it into the sanctuary we’ve always wanted. I know it will be a long process (lets face it, we are on a tight budget), but I’m thrilled at all the possibilities and seeing how it comes to come together over the next year. This print, this couch, this bed and this table are all on my radar.

Wouldn’t mind being a member of Soter Vineyard‘s Mineral Springs Wine Club. Cory and I just had a tasting at their incredible property and they are a class act. Can’t wait to share more.

Ferris Wheel Views

'Ferris Wheel Views' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured #seattle 'Ferris Wheel Views' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured #seattle

The last time we went to Seattle in 2008 we had a wonderful time, but we didn’t get to see the city like we saw it when riding the Seattle Great Wheel. As soon as I peered out the window in our room at Hotel 1000 and spotted it, I knew we had to find a way to get over there for a ride. Luckily it was in walking distance.

Built in 2012, Great Wheel is mounted out on Pier 57 down from Pike Place Market and The Seattle Aquarium (two other ‘musts’ if you are visiting Seattle for the first time). It’s the tallest of its kind on the west coast and has an overall height of 175 feet, which is roughly the equivalent to a 14 story building. Yeah… that’s pretty huge. I have been accustomed to dinky Ferris Wheels at county and state fairs. When we went up it was so smooth and fantastic, it was almost like we were floating in the sky. It reminded me of the end scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where Willy, Charlie and his Grandpa shoot into the air in the Glass Elevator. The pods you ride in allow you to look out East onto the city and West onto Puget Sound. It was even air conditioned inside! Talk about a pleasure ride! We went around a total of 3 times and stopped what seemed like 4 times at top peaks. As you can see by our photos, it was an absolutely beautiful day, just perfect for hanging out in the sky.

Seattle is such a beautiful city and seeing it from the wheel is a must. Next time we go back, I am for sure going to go back and bring some binoculars to possibly see some sea life on the Sound.

Volunteer Park Conservatory

'Volunteer Park Conservatory' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured #seattle #flowers #cacti

Seattle is one of our favorite big cities to visit, but there is so much to do there, it’s hard to experience everything in a short trip. Before leaving this time, we knew there were a couple places we had to visit. One of those places was the Volunteer Park Conservatory, a 5-chambered greenhouse with some of the most amazing and beautiful plant life in the Northwest. Jade and I are amateur horticulturists of sorts. We really enjoy being surrounded by nature at its finest and the inside of this century old conservatory is the perfect space. Construction on it started in the late 1800s and it was finished being built in 1912 when it was officially opened to the public. It is now maintained by the Seattle parks department and Friends of the Conservatory.

There are 5 ‘houses’ that all have their own types of plant life and climates: the Bromeliad, Palm, Fern, Seasonal and Cactus House. The Bromeliad, Palm and Fern Houses were all humid and tropical.  Since it was the end of Spring, the Seasonal House was filled with hydrangeas, fuchsias, scented geraniums, campanula and lilies. Our favorite house was certainly the last house: the Cactus house. We have found we are major suckers for cacti and succulents and absolutely adore their vibrancy and texture. It certainly is a magical place. We can’t wait to return…

So, today is National Doughnut Day and we are sharing photographs of cake and cupcakes. Why is that you ask? Because we went to THREE different doughnut shops in Portland and each one was completely SOLD OUT. SOLD OUT ON NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY. It wasn’t even noon! We were a bit mystified and decided to drown our sorrows with cupcakes, specifically the toasted coconut cupcake from Saint Cupcake Galore. We also couldn’t resist a slice of cake with honey lemon curd & raspberry rhubarb buttercream. Whatever, doughnuts, we don’t need you! However, if you would still like to see some doughnut goodness, you can see some right here.

And now, a few links we are endlessly enraptured with this week…

Inspired by Anne‘s body of work. I want to take polaroids like she does.

Dreaming of owning everything inside this enchanting shop.

Can’t wait to make these Mango Lassi Popsicles by Tracy.

The Hotel 1000 Experience

Posted on June 6, 2013

IMG_0562 IMG_0557

One of our first trips together when we were first dating was to Seattle and we fell in love with everything about it; the beauty of the city, the community in Pike Place Market, all of the surrounding boroughs filled with what seems like endless treasures of restaurants and shops, and Puget Sound that sprawls the West docks. We wanted to show just how much fun could be had and how much beauty could be seen in just one day in downtown Seattle. We were fortunate enough to be able to team up with the incredible individuals at Hotel 1000 who offered to host us for a night while we experienced the heart of the city. Hotel 1000 was opened in 2006 and has 120 luxury guest rooms. It’s a gorgeous building located at 1000 First Avenue and Madison Street.

The first thing we were taken aback by was how friendly and accommodating the entire staff was. Every employee we encountered greeted us and asked if there was anything they could do for us. When we drove in, our car was conveniently valeted. Our room was not quite ready, so we were treated to some delightful fare in their house restaurant and bar, Boka. Did someone say truffle fries? YUM. We then got the opportunity to tour the premises of Hotel 1000 with their incredibly sweet and informative representative, Tawny. We began in the lobby…

Then we moved on to their Grand Suite which had a view of the bay and over Seattle like nothing we had seen before. How surreal would it be to take a bath and lookout over that view!? The suite also included a fireplace, dining room and cinema room. And with access to room service you would never have to leave the suite! After touring the Grand Suite we peeked into their Deluxe Room which had a beautifully designed bath chamber and followed that with a tour of all of their lovely amenities; from ‘Fitness Zone’ the gym they have on premise, a spa named Spaahh (how cute is that!?) and even a Golf Club, a virtual golf simulator where one can work on their game, even when away from the course. They provide multimedia kiosks for their guests who may not have their laptop on hand or immediate computer access. They have free wifi as well as so many technologically savvy amenities. I think one of our favorite spots we saw in the Hotel had to be the Library, which had big comfy chairs, a stock of fine literature and complementary coffee service. Next to the Library is their 9,100 square foot conference and event space, with a ceiling that can be opened to let on fresh air and a gorgeous view.

IMG_9875

We were shown to our room in their Grand Luxe Parlor Suite where we were able to take in the gorgeous view of the city and glimmering Puget Sound. But the view wasn’t even the best part of the room. All of their rooms include heat sensor Electronic “Do Not Disturb” and Housekeeping Service features, a Keurig single cup coffee brewer that really made my morning. The beds are exceedingly comfy, the linens were of the highest quality, and the bath included a glass surround shower and a free-standing two-person “fill from the ceiling” pedestal bathtub. I’m not going to lie, I felt a bit like a movie star.

We decided to go for a walk after settling into our room to explore the city surrounding the hotel. We ended up in Pike Place market which was just a few blocks North. There are so many great places to visit within walking distance of Hotel 1000, including The Seattle Art Museum, Top Pot Donuts, Pioneer Square, and Waterfront Park. It was hard to keep away from the hotel for long honestly, since it’s just so homey and inviting. When we came back, we got all dolled up and went down to Boka restaurant + bar. It was difficult to choose what we wanted since everything sounded so delicious. We started off with an Ahi Tuna Poke, which literally melted in our mouths. Jade ordered the Alaskan Weathervane Scallops and I the Southeast Alaskan Halibut. We ended our meal with drinks and dessert which was not something that was ordinary for us. Our drinks were made up of a glass of Ruffino Prosecco and an Old School Whisky Sour. Our desserts were a ‘Not The Grapefruit Diet’, a honey panna cotta with grapefruit scented cake and mint syrup, and a ‘Strawberries + Rhubarb,’ which was a rhubarb cheesecake and semi-candied strawberries with this little crunchy and delightful lime fizzy. Suffice to say it was hard to carry on conversation without expressing how incredible it was to be indulging like we were. The ambiance of Boka is lovely, with eye catching decor and lighting which changes hue and makes for an interesting and invigorating environment. Going back to our room only a few stories up, relaxed and with full bellies, was incredibly convenient and definitely a perk of having an award winning restaurant in the lobby. We retired for the evening after taking advantage of the bath amenities. It was a perfect ending to a perfect night.

We awoke the next morning to the beautiful view outside our window and some simple lounging time with a hot cup of coffee before our spa treatment. We went down to the spa and were greeted by our very warm and professional masseuses. We both received a Hotel 1000 Signature Bamboo massage, and oh my goodness was it one of the most unbelievably relaxing moments of my life, literally. I’m pretty sure I slipped into a comatose state of pure relaxation for about a quarter of the time and the rest was just… fantastic. After our massage we were treated to chocolate covered strawberries and champagne while we came back to reality in their luxury waiting room. Leaving Spaahh was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, but I managed to work up the courage to do so. Once back at the room, we packed up our belongings and said goodbye to our room. We wanted to explore a bit more of the city before we left. The hotel was generous enough to keep our bags in safe storage and kept our car in their private parking, and told us to come back and pick it up whenever we were done, no rush at all. We really were spoiled while staying at Hotel 1000, and we highly recommend that anyone going to Seattle who would like to be spoiled and enjoy the high-life should stay there as well.

It was hard to not be enraptured by all of the beauty around us. Thank you Hotel 1000 for being such an amazing host. We can’t wait to share more of our trip when we post our adventures outside the hotel…

Our First Anniversary & First Giveaway! {Closed}

'Origrami Giveaway' by Endlessly Enraptured #endlesslyenraptured #prints #instagram #origrami #giveaway

We have been together for nearly 6 years and while we love surprising one another, we are horrible at it. We always end up giving each other gifts early because we just can’t stand the anticipation. This year was different though. We thought it would be fun to stick with the traditional first anniversary gift: paper. Nothing too big (we are saving to move AND for our trip to London in September) but no less thoughtful.

I have to say, my sweetheart knows me well. He surprised me with a collection of books illustrated (and in some cases, written) by Jon Klassen, a favorite illustrator of mine. You see, I graduated from PNCA as an illustration major and it has always been a dream of mine to illustrate a children’s book (I have quite the collection of them). When I opened the beautifully wrapped gift box to discover the books, my jaw dropped. I was so touched. We laid in bed and read them aloud, giggling and fawning over each and every drawing. Have you read them? Now all I need to do is have Mr. Klassen sign them…

Cory and I are HUGE Instagram fans. We have talked about getting some of our favorites printed in the past, but never got around to it. Then I found Origrami. Created by Sydney based husband and wife team, Jeff and Betsy, they wanted to combine their two passions: craft and Instagram and thus Origrami was born. The front of the prints resemble polaroids (another favorite thing of ours) and on the back includes a map of where the photo was taken if geotagged! Making tangible prints of our first year as husband and wife? Perfect. Cory was completely surprised and we were both blown away by how beautifully they turned out. I’m so happy to announce that Origrami has kindly offered to give TWO readers each a set of their own!

May was BUSY.  We  delighted in lattes from Coava and Barista. Shared a rainy day adventure with Mark. Dressed up for Derby Day with Harding & Wilson at the Lizard Lounge. Talked salt and summertime bites with Ben Jacobsen, the man behind Jacobsen Salt Co. Chatted with James Beard Award Winner, Mark Bitterman at his incredible shop, The Meadow. Sampled delicious gluten free/vegan sweets at Petunia’s Pies & Pastries and learned the behind the scenes story from owner, Lisa Clark. Had our tintype taken by the incredible Giles Clement. Celebrated our first wedding anniversary and traveled to Seattle (special thanks to Hotel 1000).

I’m sure June is going to be even busier since Cory is graduating and we’re moving. There is going to be so much to celebrate, I can’t wait!
